Changes at Main Street and Robert Street Intersection

Changes at Main Street and Robert Street Intersection

If you have travelled through the newly reconstructed Main Street and Robert Street intersection today you may have noticed some slight changes in the design and alignment of the intersection and traffic flow.  As part of the Main Street Reconstruction Project, the Project Design Team and  the Town reviewed the alignment of each intersection upon completion of the reconstruction design.  In some cases, the alignment was not ideal as it encouraged drivers to have to make unsafe lane shifts through the intersection.  In these circumstances, it was recommended that either the curb alignment was modified or the directional arrows were changed to promote straight or direct progress.

At the intersection of Robert Street and Main Street, the southbound right turn lane would have been in direct conflict with the new curb alignment on the south side of the intersection so moving the through lane to the left hand turn lane allowed for straight movement through the intersection which is safer.

The centerline of the road in the attached drawing shows that the alignment is better through the intersection from the newly created left turn/through lane.

We understand that this is a change from the usual way of travelling through this intersection, and with all change it will take some time and “getting used to” for our residents.  We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to grow and adapt to our communities needs while ensuring the health and safety of all of those on the road by following road engineering standards and legislative design practices.
