International Museum Day 2023: Local Museums Announce Reciprocal Admissions Agreement for Members to Experience the Richness of Local History

Penetanguishene - May is the perfect time to take a break from outdoor activities and visit local museums to learn more about the region's rich history and culture. International Museum Day is celebrated every year on 18 May to promote the role of museums in society, and it presents a great opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to explore the wealth of local museums and their collections!

The Town of Penetanguishene is fortunate to have several museums that showcase the history and culture of the area, including the Huronia Museum, and the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum & Archives.

To mark International Museum Day, these two local Museums are launching a permanent reciprocal admissions agreement that entitles membership holders to the same membership benefits at each museum. Membership benefits include free admission to each museum including access to the Genealogy & History Research Centre at the Penetanguishene Museum.

"Working with Huronia Museum on this new incentive for our museum members allows our members a chance to visit and learn more about our collective past,” said Nicole Jackson, Penetanguishene Centennial Museum & Archives Curator.  "We are thrilled to launch this initiative on International Museum Day to showcase the rich cultural heritage of our region and solidarity within the museum community.”  

Museums have always been significant cultural institutions that are essential in preserving, promoting, and sharing the past with present and future generations. They are a treasure trove of historical artifacts, artworks, and other objects that offer an insight into history and allow visitors to explore and understand different aspects of their region's culture and heritage.

Our reciprocal admissions agreement is another great example of our museums finding ways to make our communities' heritage even more accessible for citizens” said Nahanni Born, Executive Director of the Huronia Museum. “We are looking forward to seeing members of Penetanguishene Centennial Museum walk through our front door to visit our exhibits and meet up with our staff, members, and volunteers.”
