Mayor's Message - February 4, 2018
Bonjour, Good Morning all;
When Wiarton Willie said there would be six more weeks of Winter I didn’t think he meant we would get it all one weekend, it’ll take six weeks just to melt what we just got over the past few days ! The good news is that February in our area is full of winter fun. Midlands WINTERFEST runs this weekend, Tiny’s Carnaval D’Hiver next weekend and our 70th WINTERAMA occurring on Family Day weekend (February 16th to 19th).
One of the areas of interest right across Canada is the changing Marijuana landscape, there are many folks with many questions. Locally we have a firm opening up that is involved in this field, Champlain Farma. This new company is a Health Canada applicant to cultivate and produce cannabis. If you wish to learn more about this field or have an interest in what it is Champlain Farma will be doing and how they plan to go about it they have an open house this Thursday ( February 8th ). A formal presentation will start at 1 p.m. with an open house to follow. They are located at 177 Robert Street East.
I have taken a few phone calls and received a few emails regarding recent changes to Garbage and Recycling pick up. The County has made changes the came in to effect on January 1st. . The changes see one untagged bag of garbage still being collected each week (one per property) after that, up to three additional tagged bags of garbage can be collected. This provides for a total of four bags per property as opposed to the previous eight bag maximum.
Our “double-up” practice, which had previously included Victoria Day and Thanksgiving Day where you were allowed two untagged bags to be collected has come to an end. I should note that you can still double-up at Christmas.
Our new battery collection program has had excellent results over the past two years and I am happy to share that we are introducing a new curbside textile collection program that will run the week of June 11 and an electronics collection program that will run the week of September 17.

February sees the Beers Stores in Elmvale, Midland and Penetanguishene participating in a fund raising effort for Hospice Huronia as we can donate our empty beer and wine bottles to the cause. Just simply drop off your empties and inform the cashier that you wish for your bottle refund to be donated to Hospice Huronia.
North Simcoe has been selected as one of eight communities in Ontario to participate in the Business for the Arts Sponsorship and Governance Mentorship program. This
program is free to arts and culture organizations. There will be an information session on February 8th at 10:00 a.m. at the Midland Public Library. For more information about the program visit www.bit.ly/NorthSimcoe.
The four North Simcoe municipalities are presenting Doug Griffith’s 13 Ways to Kill a Community at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre February 8th at 7:00 p.m. Doug shows how attitude is the biggest factor—and roadblock—to building a successful community. Everyone is welcome.

My week ahead
Monday
sees me connect with CAO Jeff and Anita for our weekly update, I attend a media update meeting at the county and complete a look at the year ahead interview with CTV News.
Tuesday
I attend a County announcement event at Georgian College, participate in a team meeting and complete a radio interview with PEAK FM.
Wednesday
I attend an apprenticeship announcement in Barrie, I meet to discuss March Mudness, I attend a Waypoint information sharing session and our Heritage Committee meets.
Thursday
I attend a meeting for an update on our local North Simcoe broadband efforts and our Accessibility Advisory Committee meets.
Friday
I attend a regional discussion on fire.
