Council Highlights - January 23, 2019
Council Highlights provide a brief overview of noteworthy decisions and presentations made at Town of Penetanguishene Council meetings. Detailed agendas and minutes from the meetings are available on our website or you can view our livestream for additional details. Meetings take place the second and fourth Wednesday of each month unless otherwise noted.
- Met In-Camera (confidential session) regarding the legal matter related to the Philip H. Jones Pollution Control Plant Litigation Update.
- Council approved the appointments to the Police Services Board, Committee of Adjustment and Penetanguishene Public Library Board. Although one vacancy remains for the Committee of Adjustment and one other for the Penetanguishene Public Library Board.
- Council passed four by-laws including the authorization of the execution of a banking services agreement, the Council Code of Conduct, the appointment of an alternate for County Council meetings, and the amendment to the Water By-law schedule C.
Committee of the Whole (items that were discussed to be ratified at Council’s next meeting):
- Committee heard an update from the Director of Public Works about the Main Street reconstruction project.
- Committee approved the proposed one year agreement with the Southern Georgian Bay Farmers Markets for the operation of a Saturday morning market in the area across from the Beer Store known as the “CN Park”.
- Committee approved the renewal of 3 year agreement with the Ship’s Company that includes annual increases based on the municipal price index.
- Committee approved a new policy under the Municipal Act for the protection and enhancement of Natural Vegetation and the Tree Canopy.
- Committee approved the Barrie Fire & Emergency Services Dispatch Services Agreement with Penetanguishene Fire & Emergency Services.
- The legislatively-required Staff-Council Relations Policy was discussed and approved for adoption by Council.
- The legislatively-required Parental and Pregnancy Leave Policy for Members of Council was discussed and approved for adoption by Council.
- A review of the Town’s current advisory committees was discussed.
- The Committee approved the merger of the Heritage Committee and Museum Advisory Committee.
- They deferred appointments to the Downtown Improvement Committee until the Town strategic plan is completed so that the committee mandate, goals and objectives can be updated at that time based on the new plan.
- Staff will be reviewing the Seniors Advisory Committee, Youth Council and Accessibility Advisory Committee composition by obtaining feedback from the Committee members and will report back to Council with a recommendation.
