Main Street Reconstruction Update - August 31, 2018

Main Street Reconstruction Update - August 31, 2018

With the Streetscaping aspect of the Main Street Reconstruction taking shape, you can’t help but smile when you catch a glimpse of what the Main Street will look like when it is completed.  The angle parking on the hill is being completed, the intersection at Water Street and Simcoe Street has the pavers in place and the decorative pavers are coming along nicely from Wolfe Street to Brock Street. JB Enterprises Ltd. has completed the following work for the week ending August 31, 2018:

  • Placement of the Boulevard Stones from Wolfe Street to Robert Street in various sections;
  • Sanitary mainline completed to the north side of the Edward Street Intersection;
  • Paving Stones installed at the intersection of Simcoe Street and Water Street, which re-opened the intersection to vehicular traffic;
  • Granular placement and asphalt preparation completed from Robert Street to the North entrance into the Village Square Mall;
  • Traffic Lights Bases and Poles Completed in the Robert Street and Main Street  Intersection;
  • Completed Curbs from Robert to beyond Jeffery Street; and,
  • New Watermain tied into the existing Watermain at the Poyntz Street Intersection and new Watermain installation is complete

The following items are scheduled to be completed for the week of September 4th, 2018 to September 7th, 2018:

  • Place asphalt from Robert Street to Beyond Jeffery Street, including the North entrance into the Village Square Mall;
  • Continue Sanitary Main heading South from the Edward Street intersection;
  • Continue Boulevard Stone installation from Wolfe Street to Robert Street;
  • Continue water servicing from Jeffery Street to Edward Street;
  • Continue excavation and granular placement in preparation for asphalt from Jeffery Street heading south;
  • Continue sanitary services connections from Jeffery Street heading south; and,
  • Continue to place interlocking stone in the angle parking on Main Street.

With the movement of the reconstruction past the Jeffery Street Intersection, a new detour will be put in place once the paving has taken place in the middle of next week.  This new detour will provide access to the Village Square Mall entrance nearest to the Tim Hortons and will open the Poyntz Street Intersection.  There are still sidewalks to be replaced, concrete works to be completed and paving stones to be installed but this will re-establish Poyntz Street as a through street.  That being said, it will still be quicker to use Robert Street as means to travel eastbound or westbound as the detour will wind through residential streets.  A map has been attached to this notice for the relocated detour routes.

 There have been lots of inquiries regarding the work that is taking place on the corner of Poyntz Street and Main Street.   This work has nothing to do with the Main Street Reconstruction project, but will eventually become a new retail store for our Town.

As JB Enterprises moves into the reconstruction zone south of Edward Street, the rolling closures that were discussed at the public information sessions will be noticeable.  This will mean that as they progress south, the closure zone will move as well. The first closure will be from Edward Street to the vicinity of O’L Dubeau Drive.  This will allow local traffic access to the Delta Bingo & Gaming Center and the merchants in the plaza attached to it.

Thank you to everyone for your continued patience and understanding.  Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the Public Works Department at 549-7992 or visit the Town of Penetanguishene website at www.penetanguishene.ca.
