Main Street Reconstruction Update - June 28, 2018
So it seems that JB Enterprises has conquered the Hill in Penetanguishene in quick fashion. We will very shortly see the project move south of the Robert Street intersection, but not before a significant amount of work is completed in the intersection itself. For this reason, JB Enterprises will be closing the intersection of Robert Street and Main Street starting on Tuesday July 3rd. The closure is expected to last until July 13th, with the condition that the intersection will have through lanes (Eastbound & Westbound) for the weekend of July 7th. Also, the intersection of Water Street/Simcoe Street and Main Street will be opened prior to the closure of Robert Street intersection. The Public Works Department has already held a meeting with the contractor and our Emergency Service Providers (Police, Fire and Ambulance) to discuss the proposed detour routes and to listen to their concerns. Be assured that emergency services will not be compromised during this time. JB Enterprises Ltd. has completed the following work for the week ending June 29th, 2018:
- Sanitary Main and Stormwater Main line installed from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street,
- Watermain installed from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street,
- Sanitary, Storm, and Water services installed from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street,
- Excavation, Granular Placement and sub drain placement on Main Street south from the Water Street/Simcoe Street intersection to 20 meters short of the Robert Street intersection,
- Flushing and testing of the temporary Watermain that has recently been installed from Robert Street to Jeffery Street – first set of Bacteriological samples sent to the laboratory for analysis,
- Driveways and entrances prepared for new asphalt from Wolfe Street to Tessier Lane,
- New Watermain services tied in from Tessier Lane to Water Street/Simcoe Street,
- Concrete Road Base removed on Main from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street,
- Topsoil in Boulevards continues from Wolfe Street heading south on Main Street;
- Pre servicing for water completed from Robert Street to Poyntz Street.
Prior to the July 1st Canada Day Long Weekend
- Backfill Trenches, grade and place Granular ‘B’ up to 20 meters short of the Robert Street Intersection (intersection will be open for the long weekend). *Main Street to remain closed in the section from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street*
- General clean up prior to the long weekend for a clean construction site.
- Business Access to remain open.
The following items are scheduled to be completed for the week of July 3rd, 2018 to July 6th, 2018:
- Close the intersection of Robert Street and Main to begin underground works,
- Start Curb installation from Tessier Lane to Water Street/Simcoe Street and continue South as far as possible,
- Commission the temporary Watermain from Robert Street to Jeffery Street,
- Concrete Planter Curb Installation,
- Watermain swabbing, flushing, and testing from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street,
- Sidewalk installation from Tessier Lane to Water Street/Simcoe Street;
- Relocate the sanitary bypass to the Poyntz Street intersection, which will become the new Road Closed, “Local Traffic Only” posting location.
The approved detour routes map for the next phase of work has been included in this weeks’ notice. It is imperative to know that the closure at the Robert Street intersection will be set up in such a manner that traffic will not be able to pass so please follow the posted detour routes.
While the work is being completed at the intersection of Peel Street and Robert Street, traffic will be routed to Fox Street, but once the availability of Peel Street is reinstated, the Road Closed Sign will be moved to allow traffic back on Peel Street. The west side closure will be posted at Robert Street West and Owen Street. The closures will indicate “Local Traffic Only” so for all you shoppers out there, this means you. Sidewalks will remain as a viable option to access the stores so although you may have to walk a little further to get to your favourite store, it will give you an opportunity to get out of your car and enjoy the summer. Remember, the closure is only temporary….our beautiful Main Street will be here forever!!
We thank you for your patience and continued support during this work. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the Public Works Department at 549-7992 or visit the Town of Penetanguishene website at www.penetanguishene.ca.
