Main Street Reconstruction Update - September 21, 2018

Main Street Reconstruction Update - September 21, 2018

The final push has begun with the underground works expected to reach the Thompson Road intersection starting Monday September 24, 2018.  The completion of the underground works is a significant accomplishment that is a direct result of the hard work of the JB Enterprises crew. JB Enterprises Ltd. has completed the following work for the week ending September 21, 2018:

  • Sanitary main line completed up to the Thompsons Road intersection;
  • Completed the installation of the new storm structures and leads from Jeffery Street to O.L. Dubeau Drive;
  • Sanitary services and water services completed to O.L. Dubeau Drive;
  • Boulevard stones from Brock Street to Robert Street continues;
  • Excavation and granular placement for the road bed completed up to O.L. Dubeau Drive;
  • Sidewalk installed from Robert Street to the Memorial Park on the East side of Main Street;
  • Installed traffic signals at Poyntz Street and Main Street;
  • Completed curbs and sidewalk removal from Robert Street to O.L. Dubeau Drive; and,
  • Completed additional Watermain works at the Main Street and Edward Street intersection.

 The following items are scheduled to be completed for the week of September 24, 2018 to September 28, 2018:

  • Reduce the Thompsons Road Intersection to a single lane which will be controlled by Flag Persons;
  • Continue Sanitary works at Thompsons Road Intersection;
  • Continue Boulevard Stones from Brock to Robert Street;
  • Continue Water Servicing from O.L. Dubeau Drive to Thompsons Road;
  • Continue Sub Excavation and Granular placement for road bed construction from O.L. Dubeau Drive to Thompsons Road;
  • Continue Curbs and Sidewalk From Robert Street to Jeffery Street;
  • Continue Sanitary services from O.L. Dubeau Drive to Thompsons Road; and,
  • Continue Replacing Water Valves on an as needed basis from Edward Street to Thompsons Road;

With the reconstruction moving into the Thompsons Road intersection on Monday September 24, 2018, there will be additional traffic delays as the traffic in the intersection will be controlled by flag persons.  The work required in the intersection will be completed in two phases with each phase expected to take roughly a week to complete.  Maps have been produced which identify how the detours will be set up for each phase.  Communications have been sent to the local school bus consortium and emergency services to ensure that everyone is aware of the reduced access.  Although this work will temporarily reduce access at the entrance to Town, it will be the last stage of the underground works with the placement of asphalt currently scheduled for October 2, 2018.

To complement the reconstruction of the Thompsons Road intersection, there will be road widening coming into town to accommodate a tapered turning lane for heavy trucks that use Thompsons Road.  The road widening will put the new curb alignment dangerously close to the entrance angel on the East side of the entrance so the Town is currently organizing to relocate the angel further up the embankment, closer to Murray road.  The angel will still signify the entrance to our beautiful Town, but for the safety of the historical monument and vehicular traffic, the relocation is necessary.  Every effort will be made to ensure that the monument that holds the angel statue, the stone wall and the smaller pillar will remain intact during this small relocation.

Thank you to everyone for your unrelenting support and a understanding.  Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the Public Works Department at 549-7992 or visit the Town of Penetanguishene website at www.penetanguishene.ca.
