Mayor's Message - April 8, 2018
Good morning, Bonjour
I thought we dodged the winter will continue bullet when the month of March went out like a lamb, when did this April coming in like a Lion stuff start ! I have to admit hearing snow ploughs in April just does not sound right to me ears.
Activity did start last week on our Main Street and as things progress, we will update you on a regular basis. Beyond Main Street the other major item looming for this year is the municipal election. Anyone is interested in running for office in the 2018 Municipal Election you should attend the election candidate information session on Wednesday April 18th at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre in Midland. The session will be held in the Bill Thompson Room from 6:30-8:30 p.m. This session is being hosted in partnership with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs will provide attendees with information on topics such as the nomination process, financial filing and requirements and candidate duties and responsibilities. One of the items we heard many concerns about over the past few years was the maintenance and upkeep of our local town gardens, especially the garden beds located within Rotary Park . I am happy to report that council approved the addition of one seasonal part time Gardener and three seasonal full time Recreation Labourers to establish our first ever Gardening Crew that will enable us to better maintain our beautiful gardens, flower beds and planters. In terms of further revitalisation efforts for our town a report comes to council this Wednesday regarding provincial funding dedicated to Main Street Revitalization. We are eligible to receive an allocation of $43,634 from this program. Details on what we would invest in are yet to be determined.
THINGS TO MAKE NOTE OF
Sistema Huronia Music Academy will be holding a fundraising Variety Show this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Midland Alliance Church on Yonge Street. Sistema promotes personal growth through music. Details on the event are attached.
Mayor Gord McKay will be hosting the Mayor’s Mac and Cheese Fundraising Dinner in support of We Are the Villagers on Sunday April 15th at Phil’s Pub and Eatery in Midland. I have attached a poster for your information.
Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton and his wife Heather will host their annual Feast for Learning in support of the Gateway Centre for Learning Friday May 4th at 5:30 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion 196 Queen Street in Midland. If you would like to attend I have attached the details.
On May 10, the Ontario Arts Council will be discussing granting opportunities that are available to individuals working in all arts disciplines, including dance, literature, multi and inter-arts, music, theatre and the visual arts. Their priority groups include Francophone artists, Indigenous artists and artists living in regions outside of Toronto. Additional priority groups include artists of colour, New Generation artists and deaf artists and artists with disabilities. The free information session will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Midland Public Library and has been made available in partnership with the Town of Midland and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP to Karen Mealing, Cultural Development Coordinator with the Town of Midland, at kmealing@midland.ca or 705-526-4275 ext. 2200.
The 3rd Annual Tay Township Fundraising Dinner in support of Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is set for Friday May 11th at Oakwood Community Centre in Victoria Harbour. Details are included.
MY WEEK TO BE
Monday
see’s me weekly update meeting with CAO Jeff and Anita. I review both county and town council agenda’s, attend the Waypoint Leadership session and connect with MP Bruce Stanton regarding funding for First Nation and Metis Consultations.
Tuesday
I meet with Tiny Mayor George Cornell, Deputy Mayor Steffen Walma and Councillor Cindy Hasting for an update on the Teedon pit and the associated aggregate expansion application. Anita and I attend County Council, I attend an economic development committee meeting.
Wednesday
I attend a recognition event at Lakehead University, return to join in on the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centers “Day of Hope” and we have a full town council meeting at 7 p.m. The council agendas can be found at the links below;
