Mayor's Message - March 25, 2018

A beautiful weekend to start the spring, aside from the wind, the days we’re sunny and bright and put a bounce in your step.
Congratulations go out to our North Simcoe Rotaract for hosting a very successful March Mudness, the 17 challenging obstacle course saw more than 200 participant’s run through, over and under obstacles to raise money for the new CT Scanner at GBGH. The day saw more than $50,000 raised. Over the past three years this unique event has raised approximately $125,000 towards the scanner. Great fun for a great cause.
This week will see the start of our Main Street Reconstruction activities. Starting tomorrow you will see dewatering investigative work commence on Main Street between Water Street and Beck Boulevard. This work is scheduled to be completed over a period of approximately 2 to 3 days and will include the excavation and/or drilling of test holes on the Main Street. During this time our Main Street will be fully accessible to traffic with lane restrictions and traffic controls in place in the areas where the test holes are being completed.
A couple of hot topics coming to council this week, we have the recommendation to not approve the Queens Court subdivision in front of us, we have a notice of motion being brought forward to reconsider the currently approved curb alignments on Main Street and we have a notice of motion to reconsider the pickle ball court replacing one of the existing tennis court locations at McGuire Park. Motions to reconsider previous council decisions take 2/3rds (6 of 9) council members agreeing to discuss the topic. And just to add to the mix of the evening we will be discussing allowing backyard Chickens, never a dull moment !

You can save yourself cooking and doing the dishes by joining The We are the Villagers popular Pancake Breakfast takes place at Phil’s Pub and Eatery in Midland this morning from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 each for adults and $5.00 for children (under five years old). The breakfast includes bacon or sausage and beverage. 100% of the proceeds go to We are the Villagers.
The popular Our Health series continues on Tuesday April 3rd at 7:30 p.m. at the Midland Cultural Centre. The topic is Eye Care and features Dr. Daniel Laurin, an Optometrist, Dr. Daniel Scanlan, an Ophthalmologist and Fran Moreau, who is partially sighted. Dr. Keith Rose will once again be the moderator. Admission is free for those who register in advance at www.midlandculturalcentre.ticketfly.com
The Quest Art Gallery is looking to raise $5,000 by April 14th and need some help to do so, please see the attached “we need your help now to make it happen” email for details.
The Sistema Huronia Music Academy is putting on a variety show on April 14th, please see the attached for details.
My week to be
Monday – I grab an update breakfast with Anita and CAO Jeff, I pop down to the Beer Store for a cheque presentation for Hospice Huronia. Beer Store Manager Paul Stack went above and beyond with the bottle return donation campaign for Hospice, Paul had all five local beer stores involved and put up great signage in each store, I can’t wait to see how much was raised, well done Paul ! Post this I attend an agenda review for both the upcoming town and county council meetings, our youth council meets as does our Library Board.
Tuesday – sees Anita and I at the County offices for a full committee of the whole and county council meeting. I interview with Rock 95, and Anita, CAO Jeff and attend a Heads of Council meeting in Midland.
Wednesday - I meet with GBGH and County staff to discuss a home based health care pilot program. We raise the Canadian Cancer Flag at Town hall, I sign a formal agreement with the City of Barrie for our Emergency Services Campus and the evening finds me at Town hall for our regular council meeting.
