Parks and Amenities Update

In response to the Ontario Government’s phase one plan for reopening the province, The Town of Penetanguishene is relaxing a number of measures in place on local parks and greenspaces to allow for greater access for residents. Effective immediately, access to passive recreational activities can take place with members of your immediate household such as:

  • Playing catch, throwing a Frisbee, kicking a ball, flying a kite and other such activities
  • Bringing a chair or blanket to relax in parks
  • Individual activities such as yoga and fitness exercises provided, they are not in a group or class

While these additional activities are permitted, park amenities remain closed in alignment with a Provincial Order, including but not limited to: playgrounds and structures, fitness equipment and the splashpad. Organized sports are still restricted, given their necessity for gathering of groups and close physical contact.

Anyone taking advantage of visiting our local parks should be sure to follow the recommended best practices to limit the spread of COVID-19 as outlined by the Simcoe Muskoka District Public Health Unit. These include but are not limited to:

  • Practicing 2 meter physical distancing
  • Frequent washing/sanitization of hands
  • Avoiding touching shared surfaces
  • Staying home at home as much as possible

Bylaw enforcement will continue to enforce gatherings larger than five people and anyone using closed park amenities.

Additional openings of facilities as part of the phase one announcements, such as dog parks and tennis courts will be forthcoming, and we ask the public to remain patient as staff prepare these facilities over the coming days.

Updates for municipal information related to COVID-19 is available at www.penetanguishene.ca and on the Towns Facebook and Twitter channels.
