Summer Day Camp Cancellation
(Penetanguishene, ON) The Town of Penetanguishene is saddened to announce that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the 2020 Summer Day Camp Program has been cancelled.
While the Province has announced that day camps may be able to proceed in July and August, the guidelines for operating these camps are extensive. With the latest guidelines provided by the Ontario Government paired with the recommendations from Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, the Town has decided that the procedures and preparations that need to be in place to ensure a safe and operational camp for youth is not feasible at this time.
While we understand the strain cancelling day camps puts on families the decision to cancel summer camps was made in order to protect the health and wellbeing of our campers, community members and summer staff.
Last year the Town received over 700 registrations over the eight-week summer period. A usual camp week includes; weekly field trips, splash pad visits, interactive sports, crafts, hands on science experiments and more. “It is important that the Town provides a safe service that parents can trust, and unfortunately with COVID-19 we do not feel as though we are in a place to properly prepare for that commitment.” says Sherry Desjardins, Director of Recreation and Community Services, “with the limitations and restrictions mandated, camp will simply not be camp."
In the meantime, staff are preparing alternative options for online programming that would be feasible for both the Town and residents.
