The Town of Penetanguishene Works to Create a Greener Municipality
October 30th, 2020 - Town of Penetanguishene Mayor, Doug Leroux and Chief Administrative Officer, Jeff Lees are pleased to officially announce the opening of the new publicly available dual port Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station at Town Hall.
The EV charging station was made possible through funding support from the Government of Canada and has been a collaboration effort with the County of Simcoe and Ontario Education Collaborative Marketplace (OECM).
The EV charging station offers residents and visitors the ability to charge their vehicle while enjoying the Town amenities and Downtown core.
How the Station Works:
The EV station is a part of the ChargePoint global network of charging stations. The Town has adopted a pricing model that is a per hour charging rate, currently set at $1.50 per hour to encourage residents and visitors to utilize the stations. ChargePoint offers a mobile app solution to assist with station locations and payment details.
Electric vehicles are an integral part of Canada’s plan to exceed its target of reducing GHG emissions 30 per cent by 2030. Part of achieving this goal includes encouraging Canadians to purchase zero-emission vehicles, requiring a reliable network of EV charging stations.
“As our community grows, the addition of a EV charging station works to support residents with choosing electric, which will help improve air quality of our community” says Mayor Leroux.
This installation is in line with the Towns Strategic Plan initiative that outlines the commitment to strengthen our natural environment. This initiative was adopted by Council in 2019 and supports The Government of Canada’s goal of 100 per cent of new vehicle sales being zero-emission vehicles by 2040.
