Town of Penetanguishene Purchases Property at 51 Dunlop Street

Date: January 6, 2021

(Penetanguishene) - The Town of Penetanguishene has finalized an Agreement to purchase a 13-acre property from the Simcoe County District School Board. The property is located at 51 Dunlop Street – the site of the former Penetanguishene Secondary School.

The Town is now working to satisfy conditions as part of the Agreement. Once this is done, Council will begin discussing next steps for the property.

Community consultation will be a key part of deciding how the Town can best utilize the property at 51 Dunlop Street. Purchasing this large, centrally located property opens up many possibilities for Penetanguishene to support its existing plans for growth and meets our communities needs now and in the years to come.

“Staff and members of Council understand the significance of this property in our community” says Mayor Doug Leroux. “Keeping our community members informed about ongoing decisions with this property will be a focus in the coming months to ensure transparency throughout the decision process.”

“This strategic investment will provide a number of options for the community, while recognizing this purchase aligns with the 2019-2023 Community Based Strategic Plan” says Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Lees.

Members of the public will have an opportunity to engage in a public consultation process with municipal staff to provide their opinions and discuss further plans for the property. Details about a public consultation process will be announced in the near future.
