Town of Penetanguishene Shape the Future Generation with Job Shadowing Program

Over the last two days, staff at the Town of Penetanguishene had the pleasure of being shadowed by two Grade 11 students from École secondaire Le Caron. Students, Felix and Tucker participated in a 2-day class program that allowed them to job shadow careers that they are interested in.

Job shadowing is a great resource to provide students with insight into an industry or career, better understand how classroom learning can be applied to work outside of academia and learn more about the skills and educational requirements needed to follow their career interests.

Over the two-day period, Felix was able to sit in on a labour relations meeting, Senior Management Team strategic planning session, and a Police Services Board meeting. These meetings, along with 1:1 meetings with each senior team member were valuable in showing Felix the different positions within municipal government, something he hopes to join after completing a degree in Political-Science.

“I think we have an important role to play in inspiring the next generation to really develop their potential. It's also a great opportunity for our senior leaders to learn more about the goals and aspirations of our future generation” says Jeff Lees, Town of Penetanguishene CAO.

Tucker's future career aspirations paired well with job shadowing our Public Works Department. Tucker spent his 2 days assisting our roads, water, and wastewater staff in their daily tasks. This job shadowing opportunity provided Tucker with hands-on experience that has hopefully provided him confidence in his planned career choice.

We are thrilled that two local students have an interest in our municipality and hope this experience proved valuable to their education.
