Town offers free lifeguarding qualifications to become a lifeguard or swim instructor in Penetanguishene
Thursday, July 14 - With a shortage of qualified lifeguards and instructors in the North Simcoe Area, the Town of Penetanguishene is tackling the issue by offering free lifeguard training to individuals ages 15 and older worth close to $1,000.
The free program, open for residents of Penetanguishene allows individuals to obtain their Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard qualifications, with the expectation that the individual commit to 1 year as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor for the Town of Penetanguishene Recreation Department.
“This program was developed as a necessity for the sustainability of our aquatics program and the realization that earning the credentials to work as a lifeguard and swimming instructor can be cost-prohibitive. The initial cost for students to take the course is often out of reach, by removing this barrier we are opening the possibilities for more students in our area, while tackling the County wide lifeguard staff shortage” says Sherry Desjardins, Director of Recreation and Community Services.
Although the course is open to anyone seeking employment with the Town, should additional space be available, Penetanguishene residents may have an opportunity to obtain the training on a first come first served basis with no commitments.
The Course will be offered August 5th – 7th, from 9:00am – 6:00pm.
