Update: Seniors Free Conventional Transit

The Town of Penetanguishene has announced the rules for its new free senior transit program, which is set to start on August 17, 2023. The program is open to seniors aged 65 and over who reside within the Town of Penetanguishene.

Under the new program, resident seniors with a “Seniors Free Transit Card” will be able to ride the Mid-Pen Transit buses free of charge.

HOW TO OBTAIN A SENIOR’S TRANSIT CARD:

Town of Penetanguishene Seniors who wish to participate in the free transit program must obtain a NEW Seniors Transit Card available only at the Penetanguishene Town Hall, 10 Robert Street West.

Town staff encourage seniors to obtain their new cards on August 15 and 16, before the program officially starts on August 17, 2023. Please note: Cards can still be obtained after August 17.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING:

Seniors will need to show the following documentation to obtain a free senior’s transit card:

  1. Proof of ID in the form of a Passport, Driver’s License, or Green Photo Health Card.
  2. Proof of Penetanguishene Residency. Any bill with the address and resident's name will be accepted.
  3. Seniors who have an ‘old’ transit card are encouraged to bring it for a refund of the remaining rides on their current card.

Senior members who have already paid for rides on their current card will be able to receive a full refund by visiting the Town of Penetanguishene Town Hall. Refunds for rides will only be accepted until October 27, 2023.

“The intention of the program is to have seniors stay active in their community and not feel trapped at home,” said Mayor Doug Rawson. “We are excited to offer this new service to our seniors and hope that it will benefit them greatly.”

Residents who have any questions regarding the program are asked to contact the Public Works Department, as outlined below.

Previous Communication:

At the May 10th, 2023 regular meeting, Council unanimously voted for free conventional transit on Mid-Pen Transit for Penetanguishene Seniors over the age of 65, starting in early August 2023.

"I am thrilled to announce that seniors in our community will be able to ride the Mid-Pen Transit service for free. It is our duty to support our elders and make sure they have access to affordable transportation. This is just one way we can show them our appreciation for a lifetime of contributions and sacrifices." - Mayor Doug Rawson.

Senior members who have already paid for rides on their current card will be able to receive a full refund by visiting the Town of Penetanguishene Town Hall. Refunds for rides will only be accepted until October 27, 2023.

Over the coming weeks, staff will develop a complete communications plan to advise Penetanguishene’s Seniors on how to receive their cards. The program is expected to start August 17, 2023.
