Notice of Sanitary Sewer Acoustic Screening

The Town of Penetanguishene will be conducting an acoustic screening of the sanitary sewer network as part of its ongoing sewer maintenance program. This work will be carried out by Rapid Assessment Technology Services (RATS) Inc. and is scheduled to take place between Monday, April 20 and Friday, April 24. The area being surveyed is shown on the map included with this notice.

Acoustic sewer screening is a non‑intrusive method used to assess the condition of sewer pipes. Small surface‑mounted sensors are temporarily placed over maintenance holes to send and receive sound through the pipe. By measuring how sound travels, technicians can determine whether a pipe is clear or if it may be partially blocked. Each test takes approximately five minutes and does not require cameras, crews, or equipment to enter the sewer system.

The information collected during this screening allows the Town to identify pipes that may need maintenance or further inspection. Blocked or partially blocked sewer pipes can increase the risk of sewer overflows and basement flooding. By screening pipes in advance, the Town can target maintenance where it is most needed, helping to prevent future issues while reducing unnecessary cleaning and minimizing traffic disruptions.

During this work, residents may notice crews working near maintenance holes, but no service interruptions or access restrictions are expected.

Your cooperation is appreciated as the Town continues to maintain and protect its infrastructure.
