Town Continues Advocacy on CNCC Policing Costs as Issue Remains a Priority
The Town of Penetanguishene is reaffirming its commitment to resolving the ongoing issue
of policing costs associated with the Central North Correctional Centre (CNCC). With local
taxpayers currently funding policing services for a provincially operated institution, Town
Council is taking additional steps to advocate for a fair, sustainable solution.
Since the Province’s change to O. Reg. 413/23, municipalities hosting provincial facilities,
including Penetanguishene, have been responsible for significant new policing costs. The
Town has consistently raised concerns that these costs should be the responsibility of the
Province, not local residents.
“This issue remains top of mind for Council. We are committed to ensuring the Province
understands the financial impact this change has on our community, and we will continue
advocating for a fair path forward,” said Mayor Doug Rawson.
At the March meeting, Council voted to continue further coordinated actions,
including:
• Outreach to other Ontario municipalities that host provincial correctional facilities
to build a unified advocacy voice.
• Continued correspondence with the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the Premier’s
Office, and other provincial ministries.
• Updated briefing materials and additional engagement opportunities at upcoming
provincial conferences and consultations.
These efforts build on months of proactive correspondence, delegation requests, and
meetings with provincial representatives, as well as a pending meeting with MP Adam
Chambers to ensure federal partners remain informed.
“We want residents to know that we are not letting up. Council and staff are working
collaboratively, professionally, and persistently to ensure this burden does not remain on
local taxpayers,” Mayor Rawson added.
The Town will provide further updates to the community as advocacy efforts progress.
