Town of Penetanguishene Celebrates Opening of Accessible Beach Pathway During National AccessAbility Week
Penetanguishene, ON – The Town of Penetanguishene, in partnership with its Wellbeing and Accessibility Committee, is proud to announce the grand opening of a new accessible beach pathway at Rotary Champlain Wendat Park. The project enhances access to the waterfront by providing a barrier-free route from the existing pathway directly to the water’s edge, allowing individuals using wheelchairs and mobility aids to more easily enjoy the shoreline.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the park, marking the start of National AccessAbility Week (May 31 – June 6).
National AccessAbility Week, observed annually following the last Sunday in May, celebrates the contributions and leadership of persons with disabilities, as well as the work of communities and organizations committed to creating a more accessible and inclusive Canada.
“This project reflects the priorities set out in both our 20-Year Community-Based Strategic Plan and our Multi-Year Accessibility Plan,” said Mayor Doug Rawson. “By removing barriers and improving access to our waterfront, we are taking meaningful steps toward building a more inclusive community, one that supports dignity, independence, and equal opportunity for all who live in and visit Penetanguishene.”
The event will include remarks from members of the community, including a local resident sharing their lived experience with accessibility in Penetanguishene, followed by the official ribbon cutting and an opportunity for attendees to explore the new feature.
As part of the event, the Town will also highlight its continued efforts to improve accessibility through its Accessibility Plan and ongoing community engagement initiatives.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend and celebrate this important milestone in creating a more accessible and inclusive waterfront for all.
